Democratic Reps. Robert Garcia of California and Jamie Raskin of Maryland are pushing their GOP counterparts to convene a hearing regarding a major financial deal between Saudis and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump.
Kushner’s private equity firm, Affinity Partners, received a $2 billion investment from a Saudi-led fund shortly after his tenure as an advisor to the White House concluded in early 2021.
Similar proceedings have been initiated by the conservatives to impeach President Biden over his son’s foreign dealings.
The Democrats’ push for an investigation into Kushner’s dealings follows a pattern of concerns over the Trump family’s financial activities during Trump’s presidency.
A House Oversight Committee report previously suggested that Trump’s enterprises benefited from substantial foreign investments during his time in office.
Eric Trump has labeled this claim as baseless, stating that profits derived from such transactions were donated to the U.S. Treasury.
In a letter addressed to the House Oversight Committee’s Republican leadership, Raskin and Garcia highlighted the need to explore Kushner’s potential engagement in influence peddling and the national security implications of his actions in the Middle East.
They referenced earlier statements by Republican James Comer of Kentucky, acknowledging ethical concerns regarding Kushner’s conduct and indicating a willingness to investigate further.
Despite the Democrats’ motion to subpoena Kushner for more information on the Saudi investment, Republicans, including Ohio Reps. Jim Jordan and Comer, tabled the proposal during discussions focused on Hunter Biden.
Jordan lauded Kushner’s role in brokering the Abraham Accords between the Arab countries and Israel under the Trump administration.
The request for a hearing reflects ongoing tensions and differing priorities between Democratic and Republican members of the Oversight Committee.
As allegations of foreign influence and ethical breaches continue to surface, the committee faces pressure to apply consistent scrutiny across political lines.
